Rumour of killer mobile phone calls panics IHK
SRINAGAR: Panic struck Indian-held Kashmir on Friday following rumours that two men died as their mobile phones exploded while answering calls from mysterious numbers. It started with some mobile phone users flashing text messages to others, warning them not to take calls from numbers that began with digits such as 0000888800 and 000011000. The messages falsely claimed calls from such numbers caused mobile phones to explode, killing two men. The rumour spread across the region like a wildfire with nervous subscribers forwarding it to their relatives and friends. “I received this strange message at least 10 times from my relatives and friends. Not knowing what to do I simply switched off my mobile phone,” said Nazir Ahmed, a shopkeeper in Srinagar, summer capital of Jammu-Kashmir state. State authorities asked people not to pay attention to rumours. Cellular phone companies said there was no truth in them. Meanwhile, separatists shot dead five road workers and wounded three others in Indian-held Kashmir, police said. “Two militants in camouflage fatigue descended on the work site late last night near Rajouri district and opened indiscriminate fire on the labourers’ camp,” said SP Vaid, a senior police officer. agencies
